Asperger's: What Does It Mean to Me?

Faherty, Catherine

This workbook gives children and teens with high-functioning autism and Asperger's Syndrome an opportunity to understand themselves and their diagnosis. Explaining that autism is "another way of thinking and being", it offers activities that help children understand learning styles, sensory experiences, artistic talent, other people, communication, the school environment, friends, and feelings. In each of these areas, introductory material is addressed to the parent, teacher, or therapist explaining how they can help structure the child's experience in order to promote understanding and positive interaction. Special binding allows for easy photocopying for classroom use.

Dr. Gary Mesibov, director of the TEACCH program in North Carolina states, "The author's marvelous ability to understand the perspectives of people with autism and her wonderful talent of explaining difficult concepts at a level they can understand is very special. This book is a very unique opportunity to help people with autism . . ." Also available in Spanish.

Autism through a Sister's Eyes

Band, Eve B. and Hecht, Emily

When young people have questions about a brother or sister with autism or Asperger's Syndrome, clear answers are hard to find.

"Why does Daniel do that?" is the question ten year old Emily recalled asking her parents as a young child when she first sought to understand her older brother and his differences.

Written by Eve Band, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, this book gives voice to Emily's story: her questions about her brother, her search for answers about autism, her exploration of her feelings as a sibling of a high-functioning autistic brother.

Told in her voice, Emily's story is as uplifting as it is filled with valuable information for parents and siblings - or any individual whose life is touched by a person with autism or Asperger's Syndrome.

Captain Tommy

Ward Messner, Abby

This charming book has been available for several years, but it is only now receiving the wide recognition it deserves. It is for younger children (grades 1-4), and illustrates the way one young boy, reluctantly at first, but with increased interest, becomes an important contributor to the life of a fellow student with autism. Very popular with "normal" students.

  How Do I Feel?

Green, Joan

Utilizing the power of visual strategies, beginning readers learn to associate pictures with words. Students move original, velcro-backed drawings to match, identify, label, sequence and create sentences while learning to read! INTERACTIVE READING BOOKS are fun and rewarding for children with and without special needs.

Children learn to identify pictures of emotions in this book. Sentences such as, "I feel ________ when I do a good job," allow the children to label their feelings. (There are no "correct" answers.) Open ended questions at the end of the book allow teachers, therapists, parents or children to make up their own sentences. Even if the child is non-verbal or does not speak English, once they can identify the pictures you can read the sentence and the child can give you or point to the picture that labels their emotion. Another fun activity and way to assess a child's emotions is to take the pictures and put them face down. Have the child pick a picture. Ask them to give you an example of what might make them feel that way. (ex. A child picks a card that says, "excited", ask the child to tell you something that would make them feel excited.)

Little Rainman

Simmons, Karen

This wonderfully illustrated book is written by a mother as if the child with autism is speaking. Many teachers and parents use the book to educate peers and siblings as Jonathan "describes" his challenges and feelings.

Here is an example: "My name is Jonathan. I have autism (aw-tis-um). My nose looks the same as other people's and my ears and eyes do too. Except that I can see and hear a lot better than most people. My brain thinks different. Some things I do better, like reading and copying; other things I do worse, like making friends. I need help with learning to do some things. There aren't many people like me, maybe 15 in 10,000, so I am very unique. I will always need to learn how to cope in this world, which comes naturally to most other people." Also available in Spanish Translation.

The Goodenoughs Get in Sync

Kranowitz, Carol Stock

This delightfully illustrated "chapter book," geared for eight-to-twelve-year-olds, tells the charming tale of five family members and their naughty dog (each with a different sensory processing challenge) and how they get in sync after a tough day. The book is designed with the action of the story in larger print for younger readers to read or hear. Explanations of sensory processing issues are woven through the story in regular type for proficient readers to linger over at leisure. Everyone with sensory issues will find a character to identify with. Maybe your child is like Darwin with sensory overresponsivity. Or perhaps you know someone like Betsy and Filibuster, who are sensory seekers. The Goodenough's tough day starts to make sense when they realize what each needs to do to get back in sync. This wonderful book, from the best-selling author of The Out-of-Sync Child and The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun is a must-have for every family challenged by sensory processing problems!
